UNIVERSITY CENTER -- In Saturday play, the Cardinal Baseball team hosed Parkside for a pair of seven-inning games at the SVSU Baseball Complex. After losing a lead in the first game and losing by an 11-8 count, SVSU responded with a nice 7-1 win in the nightcap.
Game 1
SVSU took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning with five runs in the frame, using an RBI single from Derrek Clyde, a three-RBI double from Joshua Riggs and Riggs scoring on an error later in the inning.
Parkside responded in the top of the 5th with seven runs, using a pair of three-run home runs and another RBI base hit to take the lead at 7-5.
A quick response came in the home half of the 5th, however, as Riggs reached on an error and Anthony Kania drilled his first home run of the season two batters later to knot the score at 7-7.
The visitors scored two runs-apiece in the 6th and 7th innings, respectively, and Saginaw Valley only got one run in the bottom of the 6th on a Riggs sacrifice fly. That put the score at 11-8 as the final count.
Clyde and Andrew Burke each had two hits in the opener, with Clyde adding an RBI. Riggs had a double and four RBI for the Cardinals. Kania had the other two RBI with his blast in the 5th inning.
Jordan Swiss (1-2) took the loss in relief, working 2.0 innings. He gave up four runs on six hits with a walk and strikeout. Brandon Wise got the start, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing six runs (3 ER) on four hits. He struck-out five batters and walked three.
Game 2
The nightcap saw the Rangers take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd before the Cardinals responded the next two innings with all of their scoring.
The bottom of the 3rd had Saginaw Valley score six runs, as Clyde and Adam Turner had RBI singles, Craig Wilson drove home two runs with a double and Riggs knocked a two-run shot down the left field line to give the home squad a 6-1 edge.
A sac fly from Clyde the next inning pushed Thomas Loftus across, making the lead 7-1.
Neither team drew blood the rest of the way and SVSU was able to pull out the game two win by that same 7-1 score.
Camden Dice (1-5) picked up his first victory of the season in complete game fashion. He worked all 7.0 innings, allowing just a single unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts.
Swiss had two hits in the nightcap and Clyde, Wilson and Riggs all had a hit and two RBI. The RBI from Riggs came with his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Turner added a hit and RBI while Loftus had the other hit for the Cards.
