Baseball begins weekend with 14-5 victory over Parkside

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Baseball team opened the weekend series versus Parkside with a 14-5 victory on Friday at the SVSU Baseball Complex. Saginaw Valley registered 16 hits en route to the victory. 

Five runs came SVSU's way in the 1st inning, giving the home team a 5-0 edge over the Rangers. Adam Turner had two RBI while Joshua Riggs, Austin Koin and Anthony Kania all drove-in runs as well. 

After Parkside had a run in the 4th and three in the 5th to make the score 5-4, SV responded with three in the home half of the inning to make the score 8-4. Jordan Swiss had an RBI triple and Derrek Clyde ripped a two-RBI double for the Cards. 

SVSU added single runs in the 6th and 7th innings and had four more in the 8th inning, eventually closing-out for the 14-5 win.

Turner had two hits with a double, walk, three RBI and two runs. Koin added two hits with three RBI while Andrew Burke had three hits for the Cardinals. Kania and Riggs each had two hits with an RBI and Swiss had a double, triple, two RBI and a trio of runs scored. Clyde had a double, two RBI and reached base three times on a walk. 

Amani Godfrey (3-5) picked up the victory in the start, working 6.0 innings while allowing five runs (4 ER) on nine hits. He walked two and had one strikeout. John Fantauzzo and Jacob Crossan worked the final 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball for SVSU.

Saginaw Valley hosts Parkside on Saturday in a doubleheader, which will begin at 12:35 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning contests at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
