SVSU Baseball to honor longtime Head Coach Walt Head in Saturday ceremony

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Baseball program is welcoming back longtime head coach Walt Head on Saturday, April 27 for a special ceremony to honor the man who was at the helm of the program for 32 years.

The team welcomes all baseball program alumni and the public to the SVSU Baseball Complex for a special pregame gathering, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. near the field. Complimentary food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. That will run until the special on-field recognition of Coach Head, which will begin at 12:00 p.m. All SVSU Baseball Alumni in attendance will be announced as well and will accompany the Cardinals and Coach Head on field for the pregame festivities. First pitch for SVSU's game versus Parkside will be at 12:35 p.m. After first pitch, the tent will be an open tailgate area.

"We as a program are excited to honor an SVSU Baseball legend and a man that had a tremendous amount of success, dedicating 32 years to this University and the department," stated SVSU Baseball Head Coach Steve Jaksa. "We look forward to honoring Walt, his family and all of the Cardinal Baseball Almuni who have had a part in the past successes and paved the way for the future success of our program. We hope everybody can join us for this great event and I truly look forward to Saturday!"

Head began his coaching career for the Cardinals in the 1982-83 season and racked-up 864 victories in his career, spanning until the 2013-14 season. Saginaw Valley claimed four GLIAC Championships in that time, winning the title in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003. He led the team to three NCAA Division II Midwest Regional appearances (2000, 2002, 2007) and the team won a pair of NAIA District 23 titles under his watch. The Cardinals claimed a pair of GLIAC Tournament titles as well, winning the 1996 and 2003 tournaments. Walt was twice named the GLIAC "Coach of the Year" as well, earning the honor in 1995 and 2001. Three Cardinals were named GLIAC "Player of the Year" and four "Pitcher of the Year" under his tutelage as well.
