Cards cruise to 14-0 victory over Cleary at Comerica Park

DETROIT -- The Cardinal Baseball team hosted Cleary University on Wednesday night at Comerica Park in a mid-week non-conference contest. SVSU jumped out in front quickly and scored often, cruising to a 14-0 win over the Cougars.

Saginaw Valley scored six runs in the home half of the 1st, highlighted by a grand slam from Adam Turner, who deposited a pitch into the bullpen in left center field.

Three more runs came SVSU's way in the 2nd when Turner scored on an error and Joshua Riggs and Andrew Burke added RBI. Riggs added a two-RBI single in the 3rd and that pushed the Cardinal lead out to 11-0 after the frame.

Derrek Clyde had a sac fly in the 4th to plate Jordan Swiss while Jacob Mansfield and Riggs each added an RBI in the 7th, putting the count at 14-0 in SVSU's favor.

That stood as the final, with the Cardinals holding the Cougars to just three hits total and keeping them out of the run column.

Ian Janssen (1-1) picked up his first victory in the game, working 6.0 innings and allowing just two hits and walking three. He struck-out eight batters in the effort. Eric Fritz, Chase Gearing and John Fantauzzo combined to work the final three innings of scoreless baseball.

Riggs had a big night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs. He had two doubles of his four hits. Turner had the grand slam and four RBI for SV with two walks. Clyde had an RBI and scored twice, Swiss had a triple and scored twice and Austin Koin had a hit and two RBI. Burke had a hit and RBI, Mansfield had the same and Logan Russo added a base knock. Collin Winters walked twice and saved a run later in the game by robbing a home run over the left field fence.
