Northwood sweeps SVSU in Saturday action

MIDLAND — The Cardinal Baseball team played at Northwood University on Saturday afternoon, finishing-off the four game weekend series with another doubleheader in Midland. The Timberwolves claimed both ends of the twinbill, taking the opener 10-8 before claiming the nightcap by a 13-4 count. 

Game 1

SVSU got on the board in the 1st inning when Adam Turner belted his fourth home run of the weekend, this one a three-run shot to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. 

After Northwood responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Cards added three more to make their lead 6-2. Jordan Swiss ripped a two-RBI single and Derrek Clyde drove-in another run on a groundout. 

The Timberwolves answered back once again, however, going for five runs in the 3rd to take a 7-6 lead over SVSU. 

In the top of the 5th, Collin Winters hit a solo home run to knot the game at 7-7 before Northwood went for two runs in the home half to regain the lead at 9-7. 

The 6th inning saw the Cards make the score 9-8 when Craig Wilson drove home Andrew Burke with a sacrifice fly. 

Northwood added another run in the bottom of the 6th, putting the game at a score of 10-8. That's where the final score remained, with NU coming away with the victory. 

Swiss finished with two hits and a pair of RBI for the Cardinals, scoring two runs himself. Turner had a three-run blast, marking his fourth home run of the weekend. Winters added his second home run of the season. Burke had a double and scored twice while Clyde had a hit and RBI. 

Nolan Knauf (0-1) took the loss in the game, working 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on three hits, walking two and posting a strikeout. Camden Dice started the game, pitching 3.0 innings. He allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. 

Game 2

NU scored single runs in the 1st through 3rd innings each, taking a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals. 

Wilson scored Clyde in the top of the 4th on a sac fly, cutting the deficit to 3-1 for the Cardinals. 

Another two runs came SVSU's way in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 3-3. Winters had an RBI single and Austin Koin added an RBI double. 

NU scored a run in the bottom of the 6th and SV got a double from Swiss to score Burke that put the score at 4-4. 

The T-Wolves added a run in the 7th and went off for eight in the 8th, pushing their lead to 13-4. That's what the final score would remain, with Northwood finishing the weekend sweep.

Swiss had three hits for the Cardinals with an RBI and run scored. Winters and Koin each added two hits with an RBI. Wilson, Turner and Clyde added one hit-apiece, with Wilson adding an RBI. 

Swiss had the loss in relief, allowing nine runs on nine hits in his 2.1 innings of work. He struck-out one batter and walked three.
