#15 Eagles sweep SVSU in Saturday GLIAC action

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team dropped a pair of games to the No. 15-ranked team in the country, the Ashland University Eagles, on Saturday afternoon. Ashland took the opener by a 4-2 score before claiming the second game by a 3-1 count.

The Eagles improve to 26-3 overall and 10-0 in the GLIAC while the Cards fall to 12-12-1 overall and 6-4-1 in league play.

Game 1

There was no scoring in the game until the sixth inning when Ashland got a two-run home run to take the 2-0 lead.

In the home half, Derrek Clyde knocked-in pinch runner Logan Russo with an RBI groundout, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

Two more runs came the visitors' way in the top of the 7th, pushing their lead out to 4-1.

In the bottom of the 7th, Joshua Riggs belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season, putting the score at 4-2 with the solo blast.

The game remained there, with Ashland's Devin Peters finishing-off the complete game win after getting the next two outs.

SVSU had two hits, with Riggs's home run and a deep double to right field from Anthony Kania. Riggs and Clyde had the RBI for the Cardinals.

Brandon Wise (3-2) allowed just two runs on five hits in his 5.2 innings of work. He struck-out three batters and walked two in the loss. John Fantauzzo allowed the other two runs in relief.

Game 2

The nightcap was another low-scoring affair but the Eagles got out in front again, scoring a single run in the 3rd and 4th innings, respectively, for a 2-0 lead. Both of those runs were unearned for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the 4th, Saginaw Valley tallied its only run of the game when Craig Wilson pushed across Collin Winters with an infield single to the shortstop, making the score 2-1.

The third run for Ashland and final run of the game came in the top of the 6th, when the Eagles got a solo home run to make their lead 3-1.

That would prove to be the game two final score.

Wilson had two hits with the lone RBI while Jordan Swiss added a pair of hits for the Cardinals. Seth Stratton, Winters and Clyde added base hits as well.

Camden Dice (0-4) took the loss on the bump, working 6.0 innings while allowing three runs (1 ER) on six hits. He struck-out three batters. Iam Janssen worked a scoreless 7th inning for the Cards.
