CALEDONIA -- The SVSU Baseball team finished-off a series victory at Davenport, claiming Sunday's game by a final score of 12-2. It capped a solid weekend for the Cardinals, who took three of the four games to begin GLIAC play.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd innings, going for five runs to take a 5-0 edge. Collin Winters had an RBI single and then Joshua Riggs drove-in two runs on a single of his own. Two more scores came SVSU's way after Adam Turner had a two-RBI single as well.
Saginaw Valley tacked-on another pair in the 4th to make the score 7-0 when Craig Wilson had a two-RBI single, pushing across Winters and Derrek Clyde.
Davenport scored its lone two runs in the home half of the 4th, trimming the deficit to 7-2.
SVSU responded to that, however, using an Andrew Burke RBI double to score Turner in the 5th and an RBI single from Wilson mixed with a sac fly from Turner in the 6th. That pushed the visitors' lead to 10-2.
The Cards finished the scoring for the game in the top of the 9th, as Clyde ripped an RBI single to plate Austin Koin and Swiss scored Anthony Kania on a fielder's choice. That put the game at its final score of 12-2.
With the wins, SVSU is now 8-9 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC. Davenport falls to 12-7 and 1-3 in league action.
Wilson was 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI. Clyde finished with three hits, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Turner had two hits and three RBI while Winters had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Kania had two hits and Riggs added a hit, two RBI, two walks and a pair of runs scored. Burke had the RBI double while Swiss had a triple and an RBI. Austin Koin had the other hit for the Cardinals, who collected 17 hits overall.
Camden Dice got the start, working 4.0 innings while allowing two runs, walking two and striking-out one. John Fantauzzo got the win in relief, pitching 3.0 innings with a strikeout. Eric Fritz added 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit, walk and striking-out one to finish the game.
