Saginaw Valley splits on day one at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cardinal Baseball squad continued on the road Thursday (Mar. 7) and faced Trevecca Nazarene University in a regional doubleheader. After taking the opener by a 4-1 count, SVSU dropped the nightcap by a narrow 7-6 score and the teams split. 

Game 1

The Cards got on the board in the top of the 2nd inning when Joshua Riggs belted a solo home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. 

Jordan Swiss got into the action in the top of the 4th, leading-off the frame with a solo shot of his own to make the Saginaw Valley lead 2-0. 

In the visitor half of the 5th, the Cardinals had Gerrit Eding come through with a bases-loaded single that plated Derrek Clyde and Andrew Burke for the 4-0 lead over Trevecca. 

The only run the Trojans would put across came in the bottom of the 8th and the Cardinals would eventually win by the 4-1 final.

Swiss went 3-5 at the plate with a home run. Riggs had his solo home run for his second of the year while Eding added the two-RBI base hit. Clyde finished with two hits and a run scored and Burke walked three times and scored once.

Brandon Wise (1-0) went 7.0+ innings for the start on the mound. He allowed one run on four hits, striking-out four with one walk. Swiss worked the final six outs of the game, closing the door on the visitors for his first save of the season. He had three strikeouts and allowed just a single hit in the 2.0 innings of work. 

Game 2

The nightcap began with the Cards striking first in the top of the 2nd as Craig Wilson had an RBI single to score Eding for the 1-0 lead.

TNU responded in the home half of the inning, pushing three runs across to take the lead and make the count 3-1. 

In the top of the 3rd, however, Saginaw Valley added another pair to knot the score at 3-3. Eding scored Clyde on an RBI groundout and Collin Winters would later score on a double steal for the second run.

The Trojans added another three runs in the bottom of the 3rd, taking a 6-3 lead over the Cardinals. 

In the visitor half of the 5th, Eding would again come through with an RBI on an infield single to plate Clyde, making the score 6-4. In the top of the 8th, Anthony Kania came through with an RBI double that scored Wilson to make the Trojan lead just one at 6-5 headed into the 9th inning.

The top of the 9th saw the visitors work to get on the bases once again and Wilson came through with a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Clyde to tie the game at 6-6.

Trevecca scored an unearned run in the home half of the 9th, however, as the Cardinals committed three errors and the Trojans came away with the 7-6 victory.

Wilson was 2-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI while Eding had a hit and two RBI as well. Clyde had a hit, three runs and a pair of walks. Kania had an RBI double and Swiss was walked twice.

Jacob Crossan worked 4.2 innings of scoreless relief of Nolan Knauf, allowing just three hits while posting five strikeouts. Alex Millhisler had four strikeouts in his 1.2 innings of work at the end of the game. His only run allowed was the final unearned run.
