DETROIT -- The Saginaw Valley State Baseball team (19-18 overall, 4-12 GLIAC) took on Wayne State University (17-16 overall, 7-9 GLIAC) Friday evening (April 20) at the Detroit PAL Corner Ballpark. The WSU Warrior's went on to defeat the Cardinals 11-1.
The four-game series was originally scheduled to take place at Saginaw Valley, but due to the inclement weather, the Cards home diamond was unplayable so the contest had to be moved.
Friday's game took place at the Detroit PAL Corner Ballpark, the site of the old Tiger Stadium. The final three games of the series will all be played at Wayne State's Harwell Field. SVSU will continue to be the home team throughout the series.
On this day in 1912, Nevin Field was opened at the corner, which later became Briggs Stadium in 1938 before it was named Tiger Stadium in 1961. The final game at Tiger Stadium was on September 27, 1999, before it was demolished in 2008.
Game One: WSU 11 - SVSU 1
The Warriors started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Later on in the top of two, WSU extended their lead to 3-0 with an RBI double down the right field line.
The Cardinals used two hits in the bottom of the second inning to score their first and only run of the contest, which was off of Quincy Jones' RBI single, plating Adam Fitzgibbon.
Wayne State went on to notch four runs off of two home runs in the fourth inning to push their advantage to 8-1 over Saginaw Valley. scored four runs on two home runs in the top of the fourth inning to stretch the advantage to 8-1. Two more runs off a RBI double by the leads to nine run deficit for tha Cardinals.
Reliever Caleb Somerville came in the top of the fifth inning for Amani Godfrey.
The Warriors finished off the evening at the Corner Ballpark with a three-run sixth inning.
Somerville worked two innings, striking out two-out-of 11 batters faced.
Closer Jacob Crossan stepped in for Somerville to finish off the He struck out two batters and walker one, never allowing a single run.
SVSU fell to the Warriors 11-1 in the four game series against the WSU. Amani Godfrey (L, 4-2) received his second loss of the season, working four innings with two strikeouts and four wakls.
The Warriors now lead the Cardinals 1-0 in teh gour game series set to resume itomorrow

The teams will continue the series on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning contests beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Wayn States' Harwell Field.
