Cardinals Drop Close 10-8 Contest to the Pride

HAMMOND, Ind. — Despite a late four-run-inning for the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth, Saginaw Valley State Baseball could not take back the lead over the Pride, falling 10-8 to Purdue Northwest. SVSU falls to 4-11 in the GLIAC, and a 19-17 overall record. PNW heads to a 13-13 record, 6-9 in the conference.

With a scoreless first three innings, Purdue Northwest opened up the top of the fourth with two runs. The Cardinals responded with a sac fly from Collin Winters that went on to score Derrek Clyde, cutting PNW's lead in half, 2-1.

Three scored runs for the Pride pushed SVSU's deficit to four with Purdue Northwest leading 5-1 at the end of the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh, a PNW RBI single sent the Pride to a 6-1 lead, although Cole Brooks responded with an RBI single of his own, plating Winters in the bottom of the seventh to trail 7-2.

Two more runs in the eighth pushes the Pride to a six-run lead over the Cards.

Jordan Swiss's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth scored Clyde, followed by Swiss score. Saginaw Valley knocks the lead in half once again to trail 8-4.

A RBI double from Purdue Northwest finalizes their score at 10 runs for the contest in the top of the ninth.

Clyde started the highest scoring inning of the day with reaching first on a fielder's error by the PNW shortstop, scoring Andrew Burke and Gerrit Eding.

Swiss then doubled to left center and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop, plating Clyde, unearned. SVSU then only trailed by three runs, 10-7.

The final run of the inning scored Swiss, but it was not enough to push the Cardinals ahead.

SVSU took the 10-7 loss to the Pride, for Purdue Northwest to go up 3-0 in the series.

Amani Godfrey (L, 4-1) took his first loss of the season, working five innings and posting five strikeouts.

Brandon Haczynski (W, 1-0) took his first win as a PNW Pride member, pitching 6.1 innings with two strikeouts.
