Cardinals Post Mid-week Sweep over Rochester College

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.— The SVSU Baseball team took down the Warriors of Rochester College in a mid-week twinbill Tuesday (Apr. 10) afternoon. The Cardinals took game one 30-4, after posting a 20-run inning in the fourth. Saginaw Valley finished out with a closer matchup in game two, taking the victory 10-7. 

Game One: SVSU 30 - RC 4

Rochester opened up the first inning with an unearned run to go up 1-0 over the Cardinals, but this would be the only lead RC had for the remainder of the contest. 

SVSU responded in the third inning, starting out with Jordan Swiss scoring on a wild pitch. Swiss went 3-of-3 in game one, scoring five runs off three hits and two walks. 

Collin Winters carried the next run in with a triple to right center, plating Dean Marais to go up 2-1. 

Quincy Jones sent a RBI double to center field to send the lead to 4-1 over the Warriors. Craig Wilson's RBI single went onto score Jones to end the inning leading 5-1. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals plated a season-high of 20 runs to head to a 25-1 lead over Rochester College. 

The Warriors tried to make a comeback in the T5, but could only notch two to trail 25-3 at the end of the half inning. 

Todd Paperd notched his first college career homer, which turned into a grand slam plating Swiss, Clyde and Andrew Burke. To extend the lead to 29-3 at the end of the fifth. 

Rochester College added one run on a sac fly to right field in the top of the sixth to finalize their count at four runs. 

Paperd's sac fly in the bottom of the sixth scored Burke, to end the Cardinals scoring for game one at 30 runs. This is the first time since 2010 where SVSU has scored 30 runs in a single game. 

SVSU went on to win game one of the DH 30-4 over the Rochester Warriors to break their losing streak. 

Jacob Crossan (2-0) took the win after working four innings, striking out three, allowing only two hits. 

Game Two: SVSU 10 - RC 7

Rochester College came out on top once again in the top of the first, plating two to take the lead over Saginaw Valley. 

Swiss responded in the bottom of the inning, notching his third homer of the year, scoring Derrek Clyde to tie the score, 2-2. 

The Cardinals notched three more in the inning to go up 5-2 heading into the top of the second. 

With a quiet inning from the Warriors, Winters added his second home run of the season in the bottom of the second to go up 7-2 over RC. 

The Warriors responded by adding five runs to tie the contest 7-7 in the fifth inning against Saginaw Valley. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Craig Wilson's two RBI single plated teammates Winters and Marais. Jones RBI double down the left field line finalized the count and SVSU went on to take the victory 10-7 over the Warriors. 

Alec Justin (1-0) earned his first collegiate win with the Cardinals, while Jones notched his third save of the season, working three innings, striking out eight batters with no hits or walks. 

With the sweep, Saginaw Valley goes to 19-14 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 3-26 overall.
