Cardinals Lead 6-2 in Halted Opener at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The SVSU Baseball team opened its series at Ashland University on Friday (Apr. 6) in what was scheduled to be the first game of the four-game slate.

The Cardinals worked their way out to a 6-2 lead after 2.5 innings of play, but inclement weather forced the teams to halt the contest.

Saginaw Valley scored four runs in the top of the 2nd in response to Ashland's pair of 1st inning runs, taking a 4-2 lead. Derrek Clyde scored Todd Paperd with an RBI single and Gerrit Eding later had a sac fly that pushed Griffin Green across. Dean Marais had an RBI single to score Quincy Jones and Marais scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.

Two more runs came the Cardinals' way in the top of the 3rd as Adam Fitzgibbon scored after singling and was brought home by a Jones RBI. The sixth run came when Marais had another run driven-in to score Jordan Swiss, who reached base earlier on a hit-by-pitch.

The bottom of the 3rd inning is when the weather moved in and forced the teams to halt the contest.
