SVSU Baseball Falls in Series Finale Against Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Saginaw Valley State Baseball team fell in the finale against Davenport University Saturday (Mar. 31) afternoon, 21-7, at the SVSU Baseball complex to end the series knotted up, 2-2. 

The Panthers took a quick 6-0 lead in the first 4.5 innings of play, never allowing a single Cardinal hit.

At the bottom of the fifth, Dean Marais doubled to left field, scoring teammate Quincy JonesGerrit Eding's RBI single to the DU shortstop then plated Marais to cut the Davenport lead to four heading into the sixth inning of play. 

Davenport added one run off of two hits in the top of the sixth, while holding SVSU to another quiet inning to push the lead to 7-2. 

In the top of the seventh, DU notched two back-to-back homers to push the Cardinal deficit to seven (9-2) at the completion of the inning. 

The eighth inning brought some success for both teams as Davenport notched five runs and Saginaw Valley added one to put the score at 14-3. 

With the wind and rain coming into affect in the final inning of play, the Panthers bats were swinging away as they added seven runs off of five hits and two errors. Saginaw Valley's Cole Brooks added his first grand slam of the year during the ninth, to finalize the count at 21-7. 

Pete Zeimis (1-1) took his first win as a DU Panther, working 3.1 innings, with four strikeouts and two hits. Brandon Wise (3-3) took the loss for the Cardinals, working 4.2 innings, allowing four hits. 

DU took the finale win to push themselves to a 5-3 record conference. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to an even 4-4 in GLIAC play, 17-10, overall. 

Inside the Box Score: 

  • Brooks lead the team with four RBI after his third homer of the year. 
  • Derrek Clyde was 3-3 with a single, double and a walk. He added one RBI, as well. 
  • Marais notched two doubles at four appearances.
