Cardinals Fall in Doubleheader at Tiffin

Tiffin, Ohio — With the cool temperatures and strong winds in today's doubleheader at Heminger Field, the Cardinals were not able to prevail, falling in both contests of the doubleheader to the Tiffin Dragons. Game one was a 3-0 shutout for TU, followed by a tough second game 8-6 loss for Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals fall to a 14-8 overall record, 1-2 in GLIAC play, while the Dragons head to 8-9 on the year, with a 2-1 record in the conference. 

Game One: TU - 3 , SVSU - 0

The Cardinals and Dragons started off with back-to-back quiet innings before Tiffin bounced back with an unearned run in the bottom of the third to go up 1-0 over SVSU. 

An RBI single from the TU first baseman brought the Dragons to a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth. 

To finish off the contest, SVSU's fielding error led to a one run sixth inning for Tiffin. This would finalize the count at 3-0 for the contest with the Dragons evening out the series 1-1 over Saginaw Valley State. 

Alex Millhisler (1-2) took the loss for the Cardinals, facing 13 batters, striking out one and walking one in the three innings pitched. 

Caleb Somerville finished out the game, working three innings, striking out two and walking two. 

Game One: TU - 8 , SVSU - 6

Saginaw Valley State looked to bounce back in the second contest, putting four on the board to start off the second game of the series. 

Collin Winters doubled to left center to start off the first, RBI, advancing Quincy Jones to third and plating Adam Fitzgibbon to take the first lead of the day, 1-0. 

Cole Brooks then responded with an RBI single to the pitcher, advancing Winters to third and scoring Jones to push the lead to 2-0 over the Dragons. Craig Wilson finished off the RBI's for the inning with a single to right field, plating Brooks and Winters to go up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the first.

Tiffin responded by posting two unearned runs in the first, but could not take back the lead just yet over SVSU. 

Saginaw Valley's Fitzgibbon stole home in the top of the second to go up 5-2 over Tiffin. 

The next two innings remained quiet for the Cardinals, but a solid fourth inning from the Dragons plated five for TU to take the lead back, 7-5.

Wilson's RBI single to right field, sent Jordan Swiss home for Saginaw Valley to trail by one (7-6) heading into the sixth inning. This would be the final score for the Cardinals. 

The Dragons would find one more run in the bottom of the sixth to finalize the score, 8-6. Tiffin swept the doubleheader to go up 2-1 in the series against SVSU Baseball.
