Kirksville, MO — Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team took on Truman State in the first doubleheader of the weekend Saturday (Mar. 17) afternoon. SVSU defeated the Bulldogs 11-4, allowing only three earned runs, followed by an extra inning 4-3 victory. The Cardinals went up 2-0 in the series.
Game One: SVSU 11 - TSU 4 (7 innings)
The SVSU Cardinals took the lead in game one at the top of the first, scoring two runs. The Bulldogs then responded by plating one of their own to put the score 2-1 at the completion of the inning.
Saginaw Valley then plated one at the top of two, but again was followed by a TSU run to go 3-2 heading into the third.
Top of three was no different then usual for the Cardinals, as they notched two more runs to go up 5-2 over the Bulldogs. This was the first inning quiet inning for Truman State in the contest.
The fourth inning extended SVSU's lead by notching five runs to go up 10-2 over the Bulldogs.
The teams plated in the fifth inning, with neither team notching a run. In the bottom of the sixth, Truman State shortened their deficit to six (10-4) with the two scores on the board.
In the top of the seventh, SVSU added one more to secure the final score of the afternoon, 11-4, for the Cardinals.
Sophomore Alex Millhisler (1-1) took his first win today after working six innings, striking out and walking three, allowing nine hits.
Right-handed pitcher, Tristan Faunce, closed for SVSU in the final inning, striking out three batters, pushing Saginaw Valley State to a 1-0 lead in the series.
Game Two: SVSU 4 - TSU 3 (10 innings)
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Bulldogs put a solo homer on the board to go up 1-0 over the Cardinals.
SVSU's Todd Paperd rallied to notch one run in the top of the third to knot the score, but Truman State's solo run in the bottom of the inning took back the lead 2-1.
Another solo homer for TSU in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Bulldog lead to two (3-1).
Saginaw Valley State's Cole Brooks came in hot to start the fifth inning for the Cardinals, adding a his second home run of the season to cut the Bulldog lead to one (3-2).
Amani Godfrey ended his day working a complete five innings, striking out five, walking two and allowed seven hits.
The Cardinals plated one in the top of the sixth to even out the score 3-3. Pitcher Eric Fritz came in during the bottom of the sixth and worked two innings. He struck out three and walked two batters, allowing a solo hit that did not score.
At the bottom of the eighth, freshman Caleb Somerville headed to the mound for SVSU, striking out two and walking one in his two innings of work.
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the tenth inning where the Cardinals notched one run from Quincy Jones's single RBI sending Swiss home to take the lead 4-3.
Swiss closed for the Cardinals in the bottom of the tenth, striking out two and walking one batter. He earned his fourth save of the season.
Somerville (2-0) took his second win on the season due to his impressive two innings for Saginaw Valley.
to win both games of the doubleheader to go up 2-0 in the series.
