ST. LOUIS — The SVSU Baseball team swept the series against the Maryville Saints Sunday (March. 4) afternoon, taking the finale, 7-3. The Cardinals racked up 12 hits, with Jordan Swiss leading the way with four hits.
Even with Saginaw Valley trailing after the first inning 1-0, Cole Brooks responded with a double down the left field line, bringing Swiss around to even up the score, 1-1.
Maryville notched another run in the bottom of the second to take back the lead 2-1, but yet again, the Cardinals came out hot in the third inning, notching three runs (the second time in the series) to secure a 4-2 lead over the Saints.
Saginaw Valley kept on rolling with Adam Fitzgibbon's single, bringing Gerrit Eding home to go up 5-2. Fitzgibbon then went on to cross the plate himself, scoring on the throw when Jordan Swiss got caught stealing. SVSU was up 6-2 going into the fifth.
The next four innings were pretty quiet until the Saints put their final run of the afternoon on the board in the eighth inning.
The Cardinals were not finished yet. Dean Marais's RBI single to right field in the ninth with bases loaded, sent Fitzgibbon home and finalized the count, 7-3, over the Saints.
SVSU took the finale victory and swept the series 4-0 over Maryville, with Brandan Wise earning his first win of 2018, working five innings.
The Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games with the victory over the Saints.

The guys stayed focused, competed all weekend, and most importantly everyone contributed in one way or another. We will enjoy it for the next day, and then it's back to work."
