JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The SVSU Baseball team opened the season with an impressive 16-9 victory over the Hillsdale College Chargers. The Cardinals had 18 hits, including five players recording multiple hits, in sealing the seven-run win. The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to darkness after four innings with the contest tied at 5-5.

In the opener, the Cards had a huge 3rd inning in which they plated six runs. Adam Fitzgibbon had an RBI double while Cole Brooks, Quincy Jones, Dean Marais added RBI as well. Griffin Green capped-off the team's scoring for the inning, belting a two-run shot around the right field pole to make the score 7-2. 

The Chargers would respond, however, taking a 9-8 lead into the 8th inning of play.

SVSU added four runs-apiece in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively, to build a 16-9 lead. 

Fitzgibbon had an RBI single to get things going, then Jordan Swiss had a bases-clearing double to add three more. In the 9th, Fitzgibbon added a two-RBI single while Brooks and Jones knocked-in the final two runs. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Swiss went 4-5 in the opener with a double, three RBI, a walk and scored twice.
  • Fitzgibbon was 3-6 with a double, four RBI and three runs. 
  • Jones went 3-5 with a pair of RBI and run scored in his first game in an SVSU uniform. 
  • Mason Schwellenbach added two hits with a double and scored twice.
  • Green had three hits with his first SVSU home run, two RBI and run scored.
  • Tristan Faunce (1-0) got the win in relief, pitching 3.0 innings.
  • Brian Feinauer got his first career save, tossing 2.0 innings to finish things off. He struck-out five batters. 
  • Alex Millhisler got the start, pitching 4.0 innings and striking-out six batters.

Up Next...

Sunday's second game will be resumed Monday at 9:00 a.m. The game is tied at 5-5 after four complete innings. The teams will then play the regularly scheduled doubleheader, consisting of two, seven-inning matchups. Stay tuned to the SVSU Baseball schedule for the live stats links.
