SVSU Baseball Finishes Seventh in 2018 GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll

GLIAC -- The Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team, coming off a missed attempt at the 2017 GLIAC Tournament, the team is looking to bounce back for the 2018 season with a solid group of returning Cardinals. 

SVSU finished with 17 points overall, finishing seventh out of eight. They finished 10 points in front of newly added GLIAC member, Purdue Northwest, which notched seven points. Wayne State has been tabbed the favorite in the GLIAC 2018 baseball season, as voted on by league coaches with 44 points and three first-place votes, while defending league champions Northwood (41 pts, 4 First-Place) and Grand Valley State (39 pts, 1 First-Place) will round out the top three. 

Davenport (29), Ashland (25) and Tiffin (22) round-out the four through six slots for the remaining 2018 league standings.

2018 Saginaw Valley State Preview

Coming off a 20-28 season in which the Cardinals missed out on the 2017 GLIAC Tournament, SVSU is looking to a solid crop of returning players to improve for the 2018 campaign and return to postseason play.

The Cardinals return seven players who hit over .300 for the 2017 season, led by sophomore Cole Brooks, who hit .363 and led the team with seven home runs and 10 doubles with 36 RBI. Junior Adam Fitzgibbon, who matched Brooks's team-best seven long balls, also returns after hitting .344 with 11 doubles and 36 RBI. Junior shortstop Jordan Swiss led the Cardinals with 37 RBI last season, adding five home runs and 11 doubles while hitting .302. Sophomores Alex Millhisler, Amani Godfrey and Mason Schwellenbach will return to lead the Cardinal pitching staff.

SVSU opens 2018 action Feb. 17-18 against Hillsdale at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City, Tennessee. GLIAC play begins Mar. 23-24 when the Cardinals travel to play at Tiffin University.
