UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Rounding-out weekend play, the SVSU baseball team hosted Wayne State University in another GLIAC twinbill on Sunday (Apr. 23) afternoon at the SVSU Baseball Complex. The Cardinals dropped the opener by a 6-1 margin. Then, trailing by nine runs in the last inning of game two, SV went for six runs before eventually falling by a final score of 13-10. 

Game Three

For the third straight game, Saginaw Valley took the first lead. The Cardinals jumped out to the 1-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly RBI from Jordan Swiss, who scored Adam Turner. Alex Millhisler went into the third inning of play holding onto a one-run lead for the Cardinals. 

Saginaw Valley would carry the 1-0 edge into the fifth inning until Wayne State brought home a run of its own on a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 1. 

The following inning, Wayne State took its first lead of the contest with a pair of solo home runs to left field, giving the Warriors a quick 3-1 advantage on SVSU. Wayne State then held SVSU off the board in the bottom frame after allowing the Cardinals to put runners at first and second. 

In the seventh inning, the Warriors added on it to its two-run advantage with a two-out double and a two-run homer to extend the lead to 6-1 in favor of Wayne State. 

The Cardinals were retired in order to close out the seventh inning, dropping Game 3 by a final score of 6-1. 

Inside the Boxscore

• Adam Turner provided one of SVSU's three hits in the game and also scored a run in his 3 plate appearances. 
• Brendan Harrison went 1-for-2 at the plate and reached base a second time with a walk. 
• Mason Schwellenbach recorded the other base hit for SVSU, finishing 1-for-3 on the day. 
• Jordan Swiss had the Cardinals' only RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. 

On the Mound

• Alex Millhisler (L, 1-4) pitched six strong innings in the start for the Cardinals. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven base hits, walked one and struck out four. He was tagged with the loss for SVSU. 
• Brandon Wise pitched the 7th inning for Millhisler and allowed three runs on three base hits and fanned one. 

Game Four

Wayne State continued the strong swings into the start of the second game. The Warriors jumped out to the early 3-0 lead on SVSU with a two-out RBI double and an unearned run that scored from a passed ball. 

The one-run edge for Wayne State held up as the game pushed along into the third inning. SVSU held the Warriors scoreless in the top half of the inning and tied things up at 3-3 starting with a HBP from Adam Fitzgibbon. He advanced to third on a bloop single from Chad Carson and then came home to score on the next at-bat as Cole Brooks singled down the right field line. 

With two runners on and two outs, SVSU got the game-tying hit it it needed off a 2-RBI single from Adam Turner brought home Brooks and Carson. Both teams carried a 4-4 score into the fifth inning after Wayne State and SVSU each added runs in the inning.

Wayne State grabbed a brief 4-3 lead with an RBI double in the top half of the inning. Chad Carson went deep for his third home run of the season to right center to lock the score back at four runs apiece. 

The Warriors regained the upper hand in the following frame, scoring one run in the sixth off a single and tacked on five runs in the seventh inning to extend the advantage to 10-4. Two more runs came across to score for the Warriors in the eighth and a single run in the ninth gave WSU a nine-run lead with three outs remaining in the contest. 

Saginaw Valley mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth trailing 13-4 to Wayne State. 

Jordan Swiss got the comeback effort started with a leadoff solo home run to left center. Then, the Cardinals put runners on first and second with no outs and brought in Garrett Soule with an opposite field RBI double from Gerrit Eding, cutting the deficit to 13-6. Wayne State went to its bulpen following the double and would not get out of the inning, allowing a walk to Fitzgibbon to load the bases. Carson would step into the box next and brought in two runs by roping a single down the left field line. 

The bases were loaded once again for Jacob Mansfield, who entered the contest for Adam Turner and made the score 13-9 with a sacrifice fly that scored Fitzgibbon. Swiss batted for the second time in the inning and drove in one more run for the Cardinals, singling into left to just the deficit to three. 

Saginaw Valley's comeback was thwarted as Wayne State got the final out, taking three of four from the Cardinals by a final score of 13-10. 

Inside the Boxscore

• Chad Carson drove in three runs and scored three himself, finishing the series finale with a 3-for-5 performance in the batter's box with a home run.
• Jordan Swiss went 2-for-5 at the plate with a solo home run and two RBI. 
• Cole Brooks scored a run and went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI.
• Adam Turner had a base hit that tied the game at three for his only hit of the contest. 
• Gerrit Eding entered the game as a pinch hitter and drove in a run in his only plate appearance. 

On the Mound

• Mason Schwellenbach got the start in the series finale for the Cardinals but did not factor into the decision. He went 5.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts. 
• The loss was credited to Tyler Stambaugh (L, 0-1), who came in for Schwellenbach and went 1.1 innings in relief. He allowed four runs on four hits and walked two batters. 
• Jason Clark then came in for Stambaugh, going 0.2 innings and giving up two runs on two hits and fanned one. 
• Jake Tarbell and Brian Feinauer each pitched an inning in relief for the Cardinals.
