Cardinals split with Chargers to round-out weekend play

HILLSDALE -- The SVSU baseball team rounded-out GLIAC weekend play at Hillsdale College, posting a 14-8 victory in game one before dropping the nightcap by a narrow 19-17 margin on Saturday afternoon.

Game One

In the 1st, Colton Brooks drilled a three-run home run to put the visitors up 3-0 before the Chargers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning. 

In the 2nd, SVSU got a bases-loaded walk from Chad Carson that plated Jason Clark and a bases-clearing double from Brooks that made the score 7-3. 

The Cardinals added a trio of runs in the 3rd when Clark and Adam Fitzgibbon posted RBI singles. Carson then added an RBI in a fielder's choice that scored Clark to make the count 10-6. 

Four more runs in the 4th made the count 14-6, as Clark ripped a two-RBI double that plated Jordan Swiss and Brendan Harrison. Fitzgibbon followed with a home run off the foul pole that scored Clark.

The Chargers added single runs in the bottom half of the 4th and 6th to make the score 14-8, which is where it would stand. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Brooks was 2-4 with the home run and double, adding six RBI. 
  • Fitzgibbon was 2-4 with his long ball, knocking-in three runs, scoring two and walking once.
  • Craig Wilson had two hits and scored twice.
  • Clark was 2-3 with three runs and three RBI, adding a walk as well. 
  • Carson scored twice, had two walks and a pair of RBI.

On the Mound

  • Mason Schwellenbach (3-2) picked-up the victory, tossing 6.0 innings. He scattered nine hits and eight runs, striking-out five batters. 
  • Tyler Stambaugh worked a scoreless 7th inning to seal the victory for SVSU. 

Game Two

The nightcap featured an offensive outburst, with Hillsdale posting 21 hits and the Cardinals notching 18. The Chargers led 12-3 after 4 innings of play. 

Saginaw Valley responded with six runs in the 5th and 6th, respectively, making the score 16-15 in Hillsdale's favor. Harrison and Fitzgibbon had three-run shots in the 5th and Fitzgibbon added a two-run shot in the 6th. 

Two runs for the Cardinals in the top of the 9th knotted the score at 17-17, as Trace Woodworth and Harrison had RBI for the visitors. 

The Charger would walk-off with the victory in the bottom of the 9th, however, notching the 19-17 win. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Fitzgibbon had a huge game, going 4-6 with six RBI and two runs. He had two home runs and a double to his credit. 
  • Carson went 4-5 and scored three runs. 
  • Harrison had a home run and four RBI, scoring twice.
  • Swiss added a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

On the Mound

  • Jake Tarbell (0-2) took the loss in relief, tossing 1.1 innings while allowing two runs on as many hits, striking-out three batters.

Saginaw Valley hosts Northwood in a league doubleheader Wednesday (Apr. 19) at the SVSU Baseball Complex. The teams are set to resume another game beforehand, with SVSU leading 7-0 in that game in the bottom of the 3rd of a 7-inning game.
