Harrogate, Tenn. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team returned to the diamond on Sunday afternoon against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters. The Cardinals fell on the road by a final score of 12-1.
Saginaw Valley was unable to score first in the ballgame after a two-out double from Chad Carson was left stranded.
The Railsplitters then entered the bottom of the frame and would force SVSU to make mistakes early on, scoring a pair of runs off a passed ball and wild pitch. LMU added another run on the board later in the inning with an RBI groundout that made the score 3-0.
LMU followed up the three-run effort in the first inning with a two-out double that plated another run for the Railsplitters in the second inning. The extra base hit gave LMU a 4-0 advantage on SVSU.
The Cardinals nearly countered in the following half inning as the offense put runners at second and third base thanks to a single from Mason Schwellenbach that led to Nate Blackwell reaching base on an error. SVSU left both runners on the base paths and closed out the inning staring at a four-run deficit.
Momentum for the Railsplitters now carried into the bottom of the fourth inning after holding SVSU off the scoreboard. LMU rallied for two runs in the fourth inning with an RBI and then used a three-run home run along with an SVSU fielding error to jump ahead 10-0 on SVSU after five innings of play.
Both teams failed to notch a run in the sixth and seventh inning despite having two runners in scoring position left on base by Lincoln Memorial in the bottom of the seventh. SVSU was retired in order in their half innings and still faced a ten-run deficit heading into the eighth inning.
The Railsplitters would add the final punch to SVSU as two more runs crossed home in the eighth inning for a 12-0 lead. The Cardinals tacked on a run in the ninth inning as Brendan Harrison scored on a fielder's choice from third base.
SVSU was unable to mount a comeback on LMU and dropped the third game of the series by a final score of 12-1.
Inside the Boxscore
- Chad Carson recorded SVSU's only multi-hit effort in the ballgame, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.
- Brendan Harrison scored the lone run for the Cardinals and also tacked on a base hit in his three plate appearances.
- Brian Feinauer (L, 1-2) took the loss after tossing one inning for SVSU. He allowed three runs on one base hit and faced eight batters in his lone inning of work.

SVSU begins GLIAC play next weekend, as the Cardinals travel to Ohio Dominican University for a four-game set. Friday and Saturday both feature a doubleheader, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. on Friday and 4:00 p.m. for Game 2. Saturday's action starts up at Noon from Panther Valley Field in Columbus, Ohio.
