JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The SVSU baseball team took to the diamond once more on Sunday (Mar. 5) afternoon to complete a four-game weekend series at Carson-Newman University. The Cardinals were able to carry momentum from an 8-4 victory in Game 2 of a Saturday doubleheader to pick up a 10-7 win over the Eagles, earning the weekend series split.
Saginaw Valley scored the game's first run with a sacrifice fly RBI off the bat of Chad Carson that drove in Derrek Clyde.
The Cardinals would hold on to the 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the second inning, when Carson-Newman got on the scoreboard for the first time, tying the score at 1-1.
The score would stay locked at one run apiece for the next three full innings thanks to stellar pitching from Brian Feinauer and strong defensive play behind him. SVSU would be the next to break the tie and would do so in a big way.
Saginaw Valley began the top of the sixth inning by moving runners to second and third with just one out before Collin Winters broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single that plated Clyde. The Cardinals would then load the bases with Jason Clark stepping into the batter's box. Clark would deposit a baseball over the left field fence for a grand slam. His first home run of his colleciate career gave SVSU a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Eagles would counter the five run top half of the inning by scoring two runs of their own, cutting the SVSU lead to 6-3 after six innings of play.
SVSU tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh with an RBI double from Adam Turner and an opposite field base hit from Clark. The pair of runs helped the Cardinals double its lead to 8-4.
The Eagles still trailed by four heading into the bottom of the eighth but were looking to take the lead late in the game. After scoring two runs with two outs on the board, Carson-Newman was unable to capitalize on a bases loaded situation and would line out to Turner to close the frame.
SVSU closed out the final inning of play with a sacrifice bunt RBI from Brendan Harrison and a RBI single from Jordan Swiss. The Eagles were only able to muster one run in the bottom half of the ninth as the Cardinals split the four-game series with a 10-7 victory at Silver Diamond.
Inside the Boxscore
- The Cardinals finished the contest with 14 total hits. Everyone in the Cardinals lineup recorded a hit and six players scored at least one run in the victory.
- Jason Clark recorded a multi-hit game as the number-seven hitter for SVSU, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam home run and 5 RBI. He also drew a walk and scored a run.
- Adam Fitzgibbon had a three-hit game at the plate for the Cardinals and also plated a run.
- Collin Winters and Jordan Swiss each had two hits in the contest as well.
- Brian Feinauer (1-1) went five full innings to grab his first win of the season. He allowed two runs on four base hits, walked two and struck out five. He threw 87 pitches.

SVSU will use Monday as a travel day before squaring-off with Augusta University and Shorter University for a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game One with Augusta will begin at 2:00 p.m. while the nightcap with Shorter is set for 6:00 p.m. in Lake Olmstead Stadium.
