Cardinals Post Senior Day Sweep Over Panthers

Cardinals Post Senior Day Sweep Over Panthers

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The SVSU baseball team hosted the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday afternoon in a GLIAC doubleheader at the SVSU Baseball Complex. It was senior day at SVSU, as the Cardinals honored the seven seniors who are wrapping-up their SVSU careers this weekend. The day went well for SV, posting a sweep over ODU with scores of 2-0 and 7-2 behind strong pitching performances from seniors Bailey Magsig and Clayton Spiker.

Game One

The game went scoreless through the first four and a half innings but the Cardinals pulled through in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Adam Fitzgibbon hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Dylin Eschenburg. Jordan Swiss then followed with a single through the right side to push Dylan Schultz across the plate after he reached on a double that just got away from the third baseman down the line.

Those would be the only runs of the ballgame, as SVSU starting senior pitcher Bailey Magsig held the opponents in check, closing out the complete game victory and sealing the 2-0 win.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Swiss had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Cards.
  • Fitzgibbon was 1-for2 with an RBI on his sac fly in the contest.
  • Seniors Richard Guglielmi, Eschenburg and Dylan Schultz each added a hit in the game, with Schultz notching the only extra-base hit for the home squad with his double.
  • Brendan Harrison had the seventh hit for Saginaw Valley.
  • Magsig (2-3) notched the complete-game shutout while allowing just six hits, striking-out three batters and walking only one. It was his first career shutout in an SVSU uniform.

Game Two

The Panthers struck for a single run in the top of the second frame on an RBI double to take the 1-0 advantage.

The Cardinals would respond in the home half of the second, however, going for three runs in the home half of the inning to take the 3-1 lead. Adam Turner had an RBI single that scored Luke Valutis and Jordan Anstandig notched his first career RBI when he dug-in next and pushed Carson Eby across. Turner scored the third run compliments of a Panther error off the bat of Fitzgibbon.

Anstandig would strike again in the bottom of the fourth, as he hit one over the first baseman's head and down the right field line to score Eby and Valutis to make the score 5-1.

ODU trimmed the deficit to 5-2 after adding a single run in the top of the fifth frame.

In the sixth, Eby was moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt after he laced a single. He scored the next pitch when Turner put down a great squeeze bunt for the 6-2 lead.

SVSU added its seventh and final run in the bottom of the eighth after Eby knocked-in Nathan Blackwell, who pinch-ran for Andrew Tidwell. Tidwell reached base on his first and only career at-bat. That made the score 7-2, which is where the final would remain for the nightcap.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Spiker (5-3) worked all nine innings in his final effort for the Cardinals. He allowed just two runs and a walk while striking-out a career-high eight batters.
  • Anstandig had a pair of hits with three RBIs in the contest.
  • Eby had two base-knocks as well, adding an RBI, walk and scoring three times.
  • Turner had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Valutis, Guglielmi and Carson had the other three hits for SVSU.
