WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team rounded-out its spring trip on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the no. 26-ranked team in the country, the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds.
SVSU got a pair of hits from Brendan Harrison with an RBI and a complete game effort from Clayton Spiker on the mound to headline the victory.
The Greyhounds jumped ahead 1-0 after scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning on a groundout.
The Cardinals responded in the top half of the fourth, using a Harrison fielder's choice RBI to score Garrett Soule and knot the score at 1-1.
Saginaw Valley added its second run in the top of the eighth inning. Adam Fitzgibbon tripled to center to lead-off the inning and he would score the game-winning run on a wild pitch for the 2-1 advantage.
Spiker stayed steady from there on the mound, retiring the final six batters to close-out for the victory.
Inside the Boxscore
- Spiker (1-0) went the complete game on the mound, posting his second career victory. He allowed just the single run on four hits, striking-out three batters in the effort.
- Harrison was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
- Fitzgibbon, Soule and Carson Eby accounted for the other three SVSU hits.
Up Next
Saginaw Valley is slated to play Ashland University this upcoming weekend in a three-game slate. The non-conference series is set to take place beginning Friday (Mar. 18) with a 3:00 p.m. tilt. The teams will then play Saturday (1 pm) and Sunday (1 pm) in other single, nine-inning games.
