MONTREAT, N.C. - The SVSU baseball team posted a 16-3, mercy rule victory in seven innings on the road at Montreat (N.C.) College on Thursday (Mar. 10) afternoon.

The Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the top of the first but the Cavs responded with three of their own to take a 3-2 advantage after the opening inning. That would be all the scoring the home team would do.

SVSU tied the game with a run in the second inning and added another in the third to take a 4-3 advantage.

Two runs for the Cardinals in the fifth inning pushed the lead out to 6-3 and the visitors added one more in the sixth to take a four-run lead, 7-3.

The top of the seventh saw Saginaw Valley erupt for nine runs, extending the advantage out to 16-3. The Cards held the Cavaliers scoreless in their half of the seventh and, playing with an NAIA mercy rule due to the opponent's affiliation, the game was called after seven innings with SV taking home the 16-3 victory.

Bailey Magsig picked up the victory on the mound to even his record at 1-1 for the 2016 campaign. He worked 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits either and posting a strikeout.

Garrett Soule had three hits in the contest and Richard Guglielmi belted his fourth home run of the season. Brendan Harrison added a pair of hits for the visitors, as did Chad Carson

Soule, Guglielmi and Carson Eby all had two RBIs while Adam Turner had a hit and three RBIs.
