SVSU Baseball Back on Winning Track After 9-7 Victory Over Erskine

Due West, S.C. - The SVSU baseball team got back on the winning track Tuesday (Mar. 8) afternoon, posting a 9-7 victory on the road over Erskine College at Grier Field in Due West, South Carolina. 

The Cardinals tallied 15 hits in the contest, three coming off the bat of Brendan Harrison and there were five SVSU players who also registerred a multiple hit game.

Saginaw Valley got on the board in the top of the first when Garrett Soule had an RBI single to score Dylin Eschenburg for the 1-0 lead.

After Erskine's Henry Faunce hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to take the 2-1 advantage, SV scored twice in the top of the third to get the lead back at 3-2. Richard Guglielmi ripped an RBI single to score Chad Carson and Soule would cross the plate due to a throwing error by the shortstop.

The Cards added another in the top of the fourth to push the lead to 4-2 when a squeeze play from Carson allowed Jordan Swiss to cross the plate.

The Fleet plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to knot the score at 4-4 but the Cardinals would respond again in the top of the fifth.

An Adam Fitzgibbon RBI single scored Harrison and Fitzgibbon would cross the plate later off an Eschenburg RBI single, pushing the lead to 6-4. 

Erskine added three runs in its half of the seventh, re-gaining the lead at 7-6. That would be all the scoring the home team would do for the remainder of the contest.

Craig Wilson had a two-RBI single that scored Carson Eby and Soule to get the lead at 8-7. A Carson RBI single to score Swiss came in the ninth to round-out the scoring and seal the 9-7 win for the Cardinals.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Wilson had his first two career RBIs in the victory over the Flying Fleet. He was 1-for-4 in the game.
  • The 15 hits were the second-most SVSU has put up this 2016 season (18).
  • Harrison registered his second three-hit game of the season and third of his career. He was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Carson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk and run.
  • Eschenburg, Soule and Fitzgibbon all had two hits and an RBI. Soule scored twice with the other two adding a single run. Soule walked twice as well. 
  • Swiss kept his nine-game hitting streak going to begin his SVSU career. He had two in Tuesday's game.

On the Mound

  • Clayton Spiker threw the first 6.1 innings of the game, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. 
  • Andrew Tidwell tossed the final 2.2 innings, scattering four hits and shutting out the opponents for his first victory of the season.

SVSU and Erskine are back at it again Wednesday (Mar. 9), as the teams square-off in another contest at Grier Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in Due West.
