CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team posted a shutout victory over the Cedarville Yellow Jackets on Wednesday (Mar. 4), defeating its opponent by a score of 6-0. 

The victory improves the Cardinals to 4-1 on the young season while Cedarville fell to an even 3-3 overall.

The game was scoreless until the bottom half of the 4th inning, as both starters kept the batters in-check.  SVSU then struck and scored four runs in the frame, taking the 4-0 advantage.  Brad Schalk had an RBI single up the middle that scored Brendan Harrison and Demetrius Dunlap had a base hit that pushed Dylan Schultz across the plate.  Connor Foley then stepped to the plate and ripped a two-RBI single, plating Schalk and Dunlap.

SV added another run in the next inning, as Harrison drove-in Chad Carson on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 5-0.

The bottom of the 7th saw the Cards add another run, grabbing a 6-0 advantage when Kyle Kaufmann had an RBI single that scored Carson.

That was much more than SVSU starter Mitchell Lumley (1-0) would need in the game.  The senior was efficient all day, tossing a complete game shutout, needing only 90 pitches.  He scattered seven hits and struck-out three batters, walking none.  It was his first-career victory in a Cardinal uniform, first complete game and first shutout. 

Carson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for the Cardinals while Foley had two hits with two RBIs.  Harrison, Kaufmann, Schalk and Dunlap had the other RBIs for SVSU.

Saginaw Valley returns to the diamond Thursday (Mar. 5) to play GLIAC opponent Lake Erie College in a noon matchup.  The Storm are 1-1 on the season so far.
