UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team claimed its second-consecutive weekend series win after a 7-2 victory on Saturday (Apr. 19) over the Walsh University Cavaliers. SVSU swept Malone last weekend in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.
The Cardinals got the bulk of their runs early in the contest as they put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 5-0 lead. Dylin Eschenburg ripped an RBI single to score Luke Valutis for the first run and a Richard Guglielmi single down the right field line scored Tyler Schwanz. Connor Foley would step to the plate and knock a single through the right side, plating Eschenburg. Chris Perkovich would add another couple for the Cards with a two-RBI single that scored Foley and Guglielmi.
Walsh wouldn't get on the board until the top of the fifth inning when it scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit to three runs at 5-2.
SVSU would add two insurance run in its half of the seventh inning as Kyle Kaufmann had a two-RBI single that scored Michael Craig and Guglielmi. That pushed the lead out to 7-2, which is what the final score would stand as.
Starter Dylan Wisniewski was solid on the mound in getting his first win of the season. The sophomore righty worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing a single earned run while striking-out five. D.J. Reetz relieved Wisniewski and would go the distance from there. Reetz tossed the remaining 3 1/3 innings, allowing no runs while punching-out six Cavalier hitters to earn the save.
Kaufmann had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the game. Guglielmi and Foley each added two hits with an RBI while Brad Schalk had two knocks as well. Perkovich had a hit and two RBIs and Schwanz had the only two walks for SV.
After winning two out of three for the weekend, the Cardinals are now 11-20 overall and 8-13 in the GLIAC. Walsh now sits as 18-22 overall and 10-12 in league.
Saginaw Valley is back in action on Tuesday, as the Cards host rival Northwood University in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for March 19th. First pitch for the opening game is slated for 2:00 pm at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
