Cardinals Fall at Home to #16 GVSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team hosted the #16 Grand Valley State University Lakers on Thursday (Apr. 17) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup.  The Lakers came away with a lopsided 22-7 victory in the contest, which was pushed back from an original Wednesday date due to poor field conditions.

Grand Valley jumped out with three quick runs in the top of the first inning.  The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame when Brad Schalk singled to right field, scoring Chris Perkovich, who had led-off with a double that was lost in the sun by the center fielder.  That made the score 3-1.

GVSU tacked-on four runs in the top of the second, using three home runs to their advantage.  The Lakers would put up an eight spot in the top of the fourth, extending its lead out to 15-1.

Saginaw Valley took advantage of a pair of Laker errors in the bottom of the seventh that led to four runs for the Cards, cutting the GV lead to 15-5.

Grand Valley added six more in the top of the eighth and a run in the top of nine to push the lead out to 22-5.  SVSU plated a pair of runs in the last half of the ninth, but it wouldn't be near enough, as the Lakers left town with the 15 run victory, 22-7.

Connor Dwyer had his first two career hits in the game while Dylin Eschenburg added a pair as well.  Demetrius Dunlap had a hit and two RBIs.

With the loss, SVSU falls to 9-19 overall and 6-12 in the GLIAC.  Grand Valley improves to 24-8 in 2014 with a 15-3 mark in league play.

The Cardinals begin a three game series with Walsh University Friday (Apr. 18).  A doubleheader will begin at 1:00 pm and the final game of the series will be played on Saturday at noon.
