ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team traveled to Allendale for a mid-week doubleheader with the 15th-ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers. The Lakers came out on top by a score of 4-0 in the opener before posting a 13-1 victory in game two, claiming the sweep in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup.
Game One
The Lakers put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning with two RBI singles. GVSU added another two in its half of the fifth inning on a sac fly and an RBI single. Those two made the score 4-0.
With two outs in the seventh, the Cardinals threatened with the bases loaded. GVSU was able to close things out, however, for the four-run victory.
Brad Schalk had two hits in the opener for SVSU, including a double.
Matt Stojkov took the loss on the hill, working five innings.
Game Two
Grand Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second to begin the scoring.
The Cards responded to knot the score at 1-1 in the top of the third frame on a Luke Valutis double to right-center that scored Schalk, who reached base on a double to left-center.
The Lakers put up a four spot in the bottom half of the 3rd, grabbing the lead back and making the score 5-1. GV would then add another five runs in the fourth to push the lead out to 10-1. It would score three more in the bottom of six to make the score 13-1.
SVSU wouldn't be able to push any more runs across and the 13-1 count would prove to be the final.
Schalk had two more hits in the nightcap.
David Freed suffered the loss on the bump, pitching three innings.
The Cardinals (6-18, 3-11 GLIAC) return to action this Saturday (Apr. 12) when they host Malone University for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is tentatively set for 1 pm and a single, nine-inning game will be played on Sunday.
