TOLEDO, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team bounced-back from a pair of losses on Friday to close-out its weekend series with a 1-0 victory over the Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday (Mar. 22).  The game was played at Mercy Field, which serves as the home to Lourdes University and Toledo Central Catholic High School.

The third game proved to begin no different than the first two of the weekend, with both pitchers keeping the opposing batters on their toes as the game was scoreless through four full innings of play.

The top of the fifth inning brought the game's only run, as SVSU played a bit of small-ball to push across the game's first run.  After a Kyle Kaufmann walk and Luke Valutis single, Brad Schalk placed down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third.  Tyler Schwanz would follow and hit a grounder to second base, scoring Kaufmann from third.

Schwanz would come up big in the bottom half of the inning as well, as he threw out a Dragon runner at the plate to end the Tiffin threat in its half of the fifth.

The top of the seventh saw Saginaw Valley threaten again.  With Schalk at second base and one out, Mitchell Lumley hit a bloop single to right for his first career hit.  Schalk rounded third and attempted to score on the play.  The throw beat Schalk to the plate and although it seemed he snuck his hand under the catcher's glove on a hook slide, he was still rung-up for the second out. 

Cardinal starter Pete Baumgartner kept the Dragons in check from there, as he held them scoreless through eight full innings.  David Freed would come in and work a scoreless ninth to seal the 1-0 victory.  The win moved Baumgartner's record to 2-0 on the year while Freed picked-up his first career save.  Baumgartner scattered five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the winning effort.

Richard Guglielmi joined Schalk, Lumley and Valutis to record SVSU's four hits on the night.  Schwanz had the only RBI of the game.

Saginaw Valley is set to return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 26) in a mid-week contest at Northwood University.
