LaFave and Beauchaine Sweep GLIAC Baseball 'Of the Week' Awards for SVSU

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University senior catcher Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) and senior pitcher Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich. /Fraser) have been chosen as the GLIAC Baseball  "Player of the Week" and  "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

Chet LaFave recorded a pair of home 3-run home runs in the sweep-clinching victory over Lake Erie on Sunday. LaFave crushed a home run in the top of the first inning, while adding another 3-run blast in the fifth, his third homer of the year and fourth career.

LaFave finished the contest with 6 RBIs, which is the most by a Cardinal in two years. On the week, LaFave posted 12 RBIs with a .455 batting average, while slugging .955. LaFave is batting .329 on the season with a team-high 20 RBIs. SVSU managed to hit seven home runs in Sunday's 16-6 romp, the most in recent memory.

Carson Beauchaine allowed just one earned run in 13 innings of work as the Cardinals went 5-1 to leap back into the thick of the GLIAC standings. Beauchaine went 2-0 on the week with 10 strikeouts while giving up just seven hits as opponents hit just .149 against him last week.

The only earned run Beauchaine gave up was a solo home run in a 13-0 contest at Lake Erie. Opponents managed just two extra-base hits on the week as Beauchaine compiled a 0.69 ERA on the week.

After starting the GLIAC season 0-3 and 2-11 overall, SVSU has battled back to a 9-13 overall and 7-5 conference record in sixth place. The top six teams, minus Walsh and Malone, qualify for the 2013 GLIAC Baseball Tournament.

The Cardinals will be back in action this Wednesday (April 10) for a home doubleheader with Grand Valley State starting at 2 p.m.
