Cardinals Swept by Urbana Despite Solid Pitching Performances

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision in the seventh to Urbana University in game one of day two of the season opening 2013 Clearwater Invitational before falling 1-0 in the second game.

Game One - Urbana 5, SVSU 2 - Box Score

The Cardinals struck in the bottom of the first after a throwing error brought home Michael Craig (Milan, Mich.) for the 1-0 edge.

In the second inning, senior catcher Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) ripped a pitch to deep left center to score Niko Gonzalez (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) to go ahead by two runs.

SVSU took a 2-1 lead into the seventh before two Cardinal errors, a hit by pitch, two infield singles and a seeing eye single gave Urbana a 5-2 advantage.

Saginaw Valley was unable to get a rally going in their final at bat and fell by a 5-2 final.

Starting pitcher Eric Hummel (Menominee, Mich.) threw 5.1 innings (90 pitches) of work allowing just one run on two hits while striking out four Blue Knights.

Reliever Aaron Woods (Menominee, Mich.) was tabbed with the loss after attempting to close out the contest in the seventh.

Game Two - Urbana 1, SVSU 0 - Box Score

The Blue Knights took advantage of a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning for the early 1-0 edge.

Saginaw Valley's only real scoring opportunity of the game came in their final at bat with bases loaded and one out. Unfortunately, a line drive to second turned into a 4-6 game-ending double play to give Urbana the sweep.

Junior transfer Andrew Geese (Saginaw, Mich. / Carrolton HS / Delta) threw all six innings (109 pitches) of game two in his first start as a Cardinals. Geese gave up just four hits and one earned run on a wild pitch in the first inning.

SVSU Baseball will be back in action tomorrow (March 5) when they battle Oakland City University for a 2 p.m. start at Jack Russell Stadium.
