Saunders, Wiechmann Selected to All-Tournament Team; Saunders Sets School Record

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Two members of the Saginaw Valley State University baseball team were selected to the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament Baseball Team. Junior starting pitcher Mike Saunders (Mt. Morris, Mich./EA Johnson HS) and senior catcher Cam Wiechmann (Birch Run, Mich./Muskegon CC) received the recognition for their play last week in the 2012 GLIAC Baseball Tournament. SVSU finished third at the tournament as the fifth seed.

Saunders threw a complete game, five-hit shutout allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven. Saunders picked up the victory for the Cardinals on day two of the tournament as SVSU eliminated Ashland 4-1. Saunders was named as a member of the All-GLIAC First Team on Tuesday night prior to the start of the tournament.

Saunders set a Saginaw Valley baseball record for lowest earned run average in a single season with a 1.23 ERA in 73.1 innings of work. He went 7-2 in 10 starts with eight complete games as opponents hit just .188 against him. Saunders ERA was the lowest in the conference and is currently in the top-five best in Division II. He also tallied 72 strikeouts this season, third best in the conference.

Wiechmann led the Cardinal offense at the GLIAC Tournament going 7-for-16 from the plate for a .438 average with two RBI's and one run scored.

Wiechmann finished the 2012 season with a .353 batting average including 42 hits and 18 RBI's. Wiechmann participated in 39 contests for SVSU and led the team in home runs with three. He split time behind the plate as the team's catcher as well as in the designated hitter role.
