Saginaw Valley Eliminated by Wayne State, 13-6

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team fell to Wayne State University today (May 11) by a final score of 13-6 in their second game on day three of the 2012 GLIAC Baseball Tournament. The Cardinals are now eliminated from the conference tournament as the Warriors advance to the finals against Grand Valley.

Wayne State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with four hits as the Cardinals tried to fight back after the marathon 15-inning game that finished an hour prior.

SVSU answered right back with a pair of runs in their first at bat. Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney Central College) picked up an RBI with a groundout to plate Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University), who singled to leadoff for the Cardinals.

Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.), the next batter, doubled to the gap in right field to score Cam Wiechmann (Birch Run, Mich./Muskegon CC), who doubled to left field earlier in the inning to bring SVSU within one, 3-2.

In the second inning, the Cardinal offense was clicking as Chris Perkovich (Canton, Mich.) doubled off the left center field wall as he picked up an RBI scoring Ryan Ermers to tie the game 3-3. Ermers reached on an infield single earlier in the frame.

Saginaw Valley kept their momentum going in the third inning as they manufactured a two-RBI as Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) got a base hit off the end of the bat that landed in shallow right field. The hit scored LaFave who reached on a fielder's choice. The run was followed up by a balk from the Wayne State pitcher to score Orr and give SVSU the 5-3 advantage after three innings.

The Warriors would take back the lead in the top half of the fifth inning after a two out three RBI double off the wall just passed the glove of the Cardinal right fielder. Wayne State cleared the bases as they were loaded to give Wayne State the 6-5 lead.

The Cardinals proceeded to give up six runs in the sixth inning which was aided by an error to start the inning. The Warriors pounded out five hits in the inning as WSU took the 12-5 advantage.

Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) would leadoff the seventh inning with a triple to the right center field gap. Cam Wiechmann followed with an RBI single to right center making as SVSU attempted to chip away at the Warrior lead.

Wayne State was too much for Saginaw Valley as they took the contest by a 13-6 count, eliminating the Cardinals from the tournament.

SVSU finishes the season with a 26-26 record including a 20-16 record in the GLIAC regular season.
