UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped game one with the University of Findlay on Sunday, 9-4, but rebounded to get the win in game two, 5-2. The Cardinals improve to 10-9 overall and 7-1 atop the GLIAC standings, while the Oilers move to 7-14 on the season and 2-8 in the conference.

Game One

Findlay jumped out to a quick 2-0 edge in the top of first inning, but the Cardinals responded with a Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) sacrifice fly to plate Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Saginaw Valley found themselves in a 3-1 hole heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Cardinals closed the gap with a Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Hunt. Two batters later, Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney Central College) knocked a two RBI single to right center to give SVSU the 4-3 lead.

However, the Cardinals were unable to gain any more momentum and ultimately fell by a 9-4 final score. Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) finished the contest with three hits and a run scored, while O'Boyle and LaFave tallied two hits.

Starting pitcher Eric Hummel (Menominee, Mich./Minnesota Duluth) was the pitcher of record on the mound for the Cardinals as he scattered eight hits in three innings.

Game Two

The Oilers struck again in the first inning of game two as they pushed across two runs to take the early 2-0 lead. SVSU would score one in the bottom half of the inning as Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.) picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field to score Schwanz, who singled earlier in the inning.

Findlay would retain the 2-1 edge until the fourth inning when the Cardinals scored three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. The rally started with a bases-loaded wild pitch that brought home Michael Craig (Milan, Mich.) who reached on an infield single earlier in the inning. O'Boyle would pick up an RBI two batters later as recorded a bases loaded walk to score Kyle Parks (Flushing, Mich.). VanAlst capped the SVSU rally with a sacrfice fly to left field to score Hunt.

The Cardinals finished the scoring as VanAlst once again posted a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Parks as SVSU went on to the 5-2 victory.

Colin Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) moved to a perfect 4-0 on the season as he threw all seven innings giving up six hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four batters. Coulter threw 96 pitches in the complete game victory.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 4) when they play host to Northwood University for a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
