Carson Beauchaine improved to 5-3 on the season with a game one victory

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team posted a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) sweep over the Lake Erie College Storm today (4/30).  The wins put the Cardinals at 17-20 overall on the season and 12-13 in the GLIAC.  The Storm fall to 19-20 overall and 12-14 in league play.

Saginaw Valley took an early lead in game one, when Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) knocked-in Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) on a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.

The Storm knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run off SVSU starter Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich.).

The Cardinals responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, using a Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney Central College) squeeze bunt and Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) sac fly to extend the lead to 3-1, which is where the score would stand after Beauchaine put Lake Erie down in order in the seventh.

Beauchaine worked all seven innings, scattering four hits striking-out three batters to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Burt, O'Boyle and Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) all had a hit for the Cardinals, with O'Boyle, LaFave and VanAlst picking-up the RBI's.

The nightcap saw SVSU lead by a score of 5-1 after the second inning.  Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) had a two-RBI single and O'Boyle had a double that scored a pair.

The Cardinals tacked-on two more runs in the fifth to make it a 7-1 count.  Lake Erie plated a run in the top of seven, but would do no more damage, as SVSU closed-out with the 7-2 victory.

Mike Saunders (Mt. Morris, Mich./EA Johnson HS) had a strong performance on the hill, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing only four hits and striking-out four.  His record now stands at 4-4 on the year.

Hunt and O'Boyle each had two hits to account for all of SVSU's four hits, each driving-in a pair as well.

The two teams square-up for another doubleheader tomorrow to finish the series.  The games are set to begin at noon.
