ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split with the #3 ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers today (Apr 8) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader.  SVSU took the first game by a 6-1 count before dropping the second game by a 5-1 score.  The Cardinals move to 10-13 overall and 6-6 in GLIAC play with the split while the Lakers improve to 21-3 overall and 10-1 in league play.

In the opener, the Cardinals struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, as Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich.) homered to left field before Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) ripped an RBI single that plated Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich.) to take the 2-0 advantage.

SVSU scored two runs in its half of the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, with Hunt hitting his his second home run of the game and season, to hold a 6-1 lead.  That is where the score would stand, as the Cardinals closed-out for the 6-1 victory, handing the Lakers their first league defeat.

LaFave went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI while Hunt had a pair of home runs and three RBI.

Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich.) got the win in game one, going the distance while scattering six hits and striking-out three Lakers.

Grand Valley jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning and would lead 5-0 after six full innings.  The Cardinals scored their only run in the top of the seventh when Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich.) ripped an RBI single to make the score 5-1, which is where it would stand.

SVSU managed only five hits in the nightcap.  Colin Coulter (Clio, Mich.) took the loss on the hill, working 5 innings while giving-up five runs.

The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow, as the two teams close-out the series with a doubleheader that is slated to begin at noon.
