UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split with the Northwood University Timberwolves today (4/7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader.  Northwood took the opener by a 3-0 score before SVSU bounced-back for a 9-2 victory in the second game.  The split puts the Cardinals at 9-12 overall on the season and an even 5-5 in GLIAC play while the Timberwolves now sit at 10-10 overall and 5-5 in league play.

The opener remained scoreless throughout the first seven innings, as the SVSU pitchers held Northwood to a single hit until the top of the eighth inning.  The Timberwolves broke through for a pair of hits, coupled with three walks,  to plate three runs and take the 3-0 advantage.

The Cardinals would go down in order in their half of the eighth, falling by the 3-0 count.

Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) notched two of SVSU's five hits, while Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and Mike VanAlst each added a hit as well.

Justin Drzewicki (Bay City, Mich./Central HS) took the loss in relief after working 1 1/3 innings, issuing three walks and three runs.

The nightcap saw Northwood jump out ahead early with two runs in the top of the first.  SVSU used a Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney Central College) single to tie the game at two, as he scored Hunt and Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) on the play.

The Cardinals would erupt for five more runs in the third inning and another pair in the fifth, as the pitching was stellar the rest of the way while closing-out for a 9-2 victory.

LaFave had two hits with two RBI's in the second contest while Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) also ripped a pair of hits, including a double.  Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) and Hunt each had one hit and two RBI's, while Ermers and Schwanz had one hit.

Kevin Kerner (Richmond, Mich.) improved to 1-1 on the season, throwing six innings of two-hit ball while only allowing a pair of runs.  Cardinal pitchers held the Timberwolves to five hits for the doubleheader.

SVSU is back in action again this weekend, as the Cardinals travel to take-on #4 Grand Valley State University in a weekend GLIAC series.  Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's twinbill will start at noon.
