SVSU Sweeps Findlay, 12-2 and 3-2

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team defeated the Oilers of Findlay today (April 2) by scores of 12-2 and 3-2 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match-up.  With the win, the Cardinals move to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in GLIAC action while Findlay falls to 2-15-1 on the season and 0-8 in conference play.

In game one, the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when junior Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) doubled to right field, putting Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) in scoring position. Junior Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) flew out to right field, scoring Schwanz to give SVSU their first run of the game on the SAC fly.  The Cardinals would score two more runs in the fourth inning.

Saginaw Valley would add three more runs in the fifth inning and had a four-run sixth inning to extend the lead to 10-2 over the Oilers.

The Cardinals would add their final two runs in the seventh inning when junior Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) doubled to left center field and would advance to third on a single off the bat of Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS).  Ermers would then lace a double, scoring both Hunt and Burt to close out the inning, and to give the Cardinals a 12-2 victory.

Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) picked up the win for Saginaw Valley, throwing six innings and striking-out five.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Ermers who ended the first game with four hits and four RBI's while Woock and Burt both posted two hits each. 

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cardinals were the first to light up the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead over Findlay in the first inning as Ermers knocked in Burt on a double.  

SVSU would extend their lead to two runs in the top of the third inning as sophomore Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) drew a walk, scoring Burt.  The Oilers responded in the bottom of the third inning by scoring two runs, however the Cardinals would reclaim the lead in the seventh inning as senior Dustin Mayner (Gains, Mich./Linden HS) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, which would send Burt home to give Saginaw Valley the 3-2 victory.

Freshman Andrew Tidwell (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) recorded his first win on the mound for the Cardinals, recording three strike-outs on the afternoon.

Burt would finish the second game with three hits and three runs score, while Ermers posted two hits and an RBI.

The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (April 3) in double-header action against Findlay.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00.
