Cardinals' Bats Heat Up In 14-4 Victory Over Northern State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team defeated the Northern State University Wolves on day two of play at the Russ Matt Invitational.  The Cardinals (2-1) pounded-out 14 hits on the day en-route to a 14-4 victory over the Wolves (1-3).

SVSU struck first in the contest, plating four runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by sophomore Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney State College), which scored fellow sophomore Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) and junior Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University).

Northern State would answer with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-3.  The Wolves would add a single run in their half of the fifth, which would end their scoring for the contest.

The Cardinals notched at least one run an inning the rest of the way, pushing three runs across in the bottom of six and four in the last half of the eighth inning.  In the final inning, junior Dan Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) laced an RBI double, which scored junior Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS).  A bases-clearing double by Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) would end the game, as he scored Hunt, Norton and sophomore Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), making the score 14-4.

Schwanz had a pair of hits for the Cardinals and four RBI's.  Hunt, O'Boyle, Burt and senior Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) all had two hits and an RBI.  LaFave was 1-for-1 on the day with three walks and three RBI's. 

Senior Craig Engerer (Freeland, Mich.) picked-up the win after pitching 2.2 innings in relief of starter Colin Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS), who went 4.1 innings strong while only allowing two earned runs.
