UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split with the Ashland University Eagles Wednesday (Apr. 21), losing the first game by a score of 3-2 before winning 1-0 in the nightcap. The split puts the Cardinals at 17-17 overall and 13-11 in the GLIAC, while Ashland is now 24-16 overall and 14-10 in conference play.
Game One
The Eagles scored a run in the top of the third and another two in the top of four to take a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when SVSU put a pair of runs on the board, making the score 3-2. Saginaw wasn't able to put any more runs on the board, though, going doewn 1-2-3 in the seventh, as Ashland closed-out for the one-run victory.
Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) had the only two hits for the Cardinals, one being a double while adding a run scored. Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) scored the other SVSU run.
Scott Horman (St. Louis, Mich.) took the loss on the mound, working 4.0 innings while allowing three runs on six Eagle hits. Craig Engerer (Freeland, Mich.) worked 3.0 perfect innings of relief for the Cardinals.
Game Two
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS), which scored Peterson. That would be all SVSU would need, as Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich.) fired a complete game, two-hitter to blank the Eagles. Beauchaine added five strikeouts and only walked one batter in his second victory of the season.
Peterson and Hunt had the other two Cardinal hits, as they narrowly out-hit Ashland, 3-2 in the nightcap.
SVSU is back in action this weekend, as it hosts #14 Grand Valley State in a pair of GLIAC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
