DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team couldn't avoid a weekend sweep on Sunday, losing 7-2 at Wayne State University in a single GLIAC contest on Sunday (Apr. 11). With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 11-15 overall on the season and 8-9 in the GLIAC. The Warriors improve to 19-12 overall and 14-3 in conference play.
The Cardinals struck first in the contest, scoring a pair of runs in their half of the third inning. A single up the middle by Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) scored Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) and Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC), making the score 2-0.
Wayne State would score a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Cardinal advantage in half at 2-1. Wayne State would score six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as SVSU couldn't get on the board again, falling by five runs.
Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) each had two hits on the afternoon. VanAlst had one hit, knocking-in the only two SVSU runs. Dore and Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) also added singles in the game.
Kevin Kerner (Richmond, Mich.) took the loss on the mound, working 7 1/3 innings while allowing five runs on six hits and striking-out three Warrior hitters.
SVSU is back in action Tuesday (Apr. 13), as it travels to Alma College for a single nine-inning contest. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
