Cardinals Drop Two to Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Wayne State today (April 10) 8-4 and 8-3 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up.

Game One

The Cardinals fell to an eight-run deficit by the top of the third inning as Wayne State scored six runs in the first inning and two in the second.  Saginaw Valley lit up the scoreboard for the first time as Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) flew out to right field, scoring Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Howell HS/Concordia University).  Their second run of the inning would come off the bat of Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek HS), sending Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) home. 

The Cardinals posted another two-run inning in their half of the fifth inning as Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) scored on a Dore ground out just before Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) singled up the middle to send Hunt home. 

The Cardinals were led overall by Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich./Clio HS) and Dore who both posted two hits on the contest.  Scott Haase (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) took the loss for Saginaw Valley on the mound.

Game Two

The Cardinals took a three-run deficit by the top of the third inning, however would gain their first run as Dore flew out to center field, scoring VanAlst.  Saginaw Valley added another run in their half of the fifth inning as Dore posted one of his three hits to right field, scoring Hunt. 

The Cardinals would score their third and final run on the game as Peterson hit a double to left field, sending Dore home, however it would not be enough as the Saginaw Valley fell by a final score of 8-3.

Dore ended the afternoon with three hits while Peterson and Coulter both went two-for-three on the afternoon.  Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) took the loss for the Cardinals on the mound.

With the pair of losses, the Cardinals fall to 11-14 overall on the season and 8-8 in the GLIAC while Wayne State moves to 18-12 overall on the season, 12-3 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will face Wayne State again tomorrow (April 11) in a nine-inning contest. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m.
