Cardinals Drop Doubleheader to Eagles

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Ashland today (Mar. 27) 13-3 and 7-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

GAME ONE
The Cardinals would jump out to an early 1-0 lead when Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) drove in Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) in the top of the first inning.  Ashland would answer back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage.  Dore would score again in the top of the third inning on an error by the Eagles to cut the lead to 4-2.  The Ashland offense would score nine stright runs before the Cardinals could push their last run across in the top of the seventh inning and end the scoring at 13-3.

Kevin Kerner (Richmond, Mich./Richmond HS) took the loss for the Cardinals, giving up nine runs on eleven hits and striking out two batters in three and a third innings of work.

GAME TWO
Saginaw Valley would find themselves in a 7-0 hole in the seventh inning before they would light the scoreboard with their first run of the afternoon as pinch runner Scott Horman  (St. Louis, Mich.) scored on a Josh Kozuch (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western/Oakland University) bases loaded walk.  Luke McClain (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson HS) would score the Cardinals second run of the inning on a Webber single to left field, before Ashland would stop the Saginaw Valley rally and end the game.

Garrett Grundman (Croswell, Mich./Crosswell-Lexington HS/Graceland University) took the loss for the Cardinals, giving up three runs on three hits in three innings of work on the afternoon.

Saginaw Valley falls to 8-10 overall on the season and 5-4 in the GLIAC, while Ashland improves to 14-9 overall on the season and 6-3 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals and Eagles will be back in action on Sunday (Mar. 28) in a nine inning contest starting at noon.
