Cardinals Fall to Timberwolves

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team lost a pair of games today (May 2) to the Northwood Timberwolves at Dow Diamond, 2-1 and 15-2.

GAME 1
It was a defense-oriented game to open the twinbill as both teams were unable to produce much offense. Freshman Ryan Longstreth (Beaverton, Mich.) held the Timberwolves to only seven hits, while he struck out four.

Northwood was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third, but the Cardinals were able to pull even in the top of the fourth as junior Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich.) hit a two-out single to left field before freshman Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) smacked a double to right center field to score the speedster Peterson from first base for SVSU’s lone run of the game.

Northwood would win the game in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME 2
In the night cap, the Timberwolves came out strong and didn’t let up as they were able to score four runs in the first and four more in the second to leap to an 8-1 lead.

In the top of the first, junior Kevin Dore (Bay City, Mich.) led the game off with a single up the middle, followed by a one-out walk issued to junior Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.). With two on, and two out, Peterson walked to load the bases for sophomore Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich.), who drew a walk to force Dore home.

The Cardinals would add one more in the third as junior Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich.) led the inning off with a walk, and advanced to third on a single through the left side by Thomas. With one out, Peterson grounded out to second base, but Coulter would touch advance home on the play.

With the losses, the Cardinals fall to 17-27-1 overall and 13-18-1 in the GLIAC, while Northwood improves to 23-20 overall and 17-15 in the GLIAC. These teams will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday (May 3) at the SVSU Athletic Complex.
