SVSU Breast Cancer Survivor and Recognition Event

February 20, 2016

SVSU Athletics hosted the 8th annual breast cancer survivor reception and recognition event on February 20, 2016 in coordination with a home basketball double header contest during the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Pink Wave week.  Fifty-six breast cancer survivors and your families came to the campus of SVSU to celebrate a journey of courage, hope and faith.

Commemorative t-shirts, miscellaneous other promotional items were sold for a profit of $2,700 which will be donated to Covenant Breast Health Program CARE fund.  To date SVSU Athletics has raised $27,070 for the CARE fund, which provides mammography, breast cancer screening and initial follow-up consultations and treatment for under and uninsured women between the ages forty and sixty-five.

As a result of the contributions over the last 8 years Covenant Breast Health Center has held 5 FREE Mammogram Screening Days since 2010 serving over four hundred women in our community. Certified Mammography technicians, physicians, nurses and support staff volunteer their time for the event. The CARE fund picks up the cost of additional breast images, biopsies and if needed surgical expenses. Having the CARE fund allows those impacted by this disease to move forward with further testing without the additional worry of not being able to pay for services.

This event was made possible by the generous contributions of our Cardinal athletics volunteers, student-athletes and sponsors including Dr. Ernie Balcueva, Catholic Federal Credit Union, Mitchell Motorcoach and Covenant Cancer Care Center.  Additional support was provided by Your Healthy Balance, donating a massage to every survivor and Cardinal Deli, providing the reception.

Save the date, the 9th annual event will be  held on February 18, 2017.
